Kids should cry when their arm is broken and hanging off and when somebody dies. Thats it.

Early examples of early Black dandyism.

Actually I have read somewhere that the “negro dandy” was a stereotype often used in caricatures of the 19th century.

yep, playing on the classical notion of comedy as an inversion of expectations, it was hilarious to people at the time that a person of African descent would attempt to dress stylishly and possess any poise whatso ever. The clothing was usually subtley outdated (as a True Dandy would never do that, but a Black person would not know any better/too poor to afford any better), and, as to be expected, the movements highly exaggerated. They were often portrayed in relation to the Slave archetype, to highlight how ludicrous people at the time thought it was for slaves (savages) to dress like white men. Dandies at the time were also seen as ridiculous and frivolous, but it’s taking an archetype that is predicated on working and taking out the work ethic for performative class-jumping. This was before the belief that all Blacks were lazy—while Sambo was already a stock character, early incarnations of that character were much less….exaggerated. It wasn’t until post-slavery that the notion of the violent/incredibly lazt/completely dangerous to society archetypes of Black men really started taking over. Of course the fear and belief in their innate “savagery” and inferority was present, but they believed that as long as they were under white control, they were more like naughty children than anything—playing dress up to look like white folks, always getting into something, etc. (I took a class called “The History of Entertainment and Identity in America and we spent a pretty good amount of class time talking about Vaudeville, and this really all I remember. We didn’t talk too much about the Slave/Dandy dichotomy.)
